Team introduction - Sarah

What are your tasks at ULT?

My main task at ULT is to send updates from the children to their sponsors, which I really enjoy. When I’m back in Kenya in May, I’m really looking forward to organising and running the Health Day with Lea and the local team for a second time.

Why are you involved in ULT?

I took on my first school sponsorship at the age of 16 and then a second one a year later and have always diligently read all the newsletters and followed ULT’s work on Instagram. I flew to Kenya a few months after graduating from high school and was able to actively help out for two months, taking the children to my heart and also getting a great insight into life on the ground and the great work of ULT and ULI. After the first two weeks, I already realised that I would like to do something good from Germany and continue to support ULT. I had wanted to volunteer for some time, but with ULT I have now found exactly what I was looking for – closeness, transparency, a great motivated team and the feeling that I can really make a positive difference.

What was your favourite subject and what was your hate subject at school?

My favourite subjects were English and French because I love learning new languages. I also like travelling and find it really nice to be able to communicate in the language of the country or at least understand a few words. Chemistry and physics, on the other hand, were subjects that I didn’t enjoy at all and I was never really good at either.

Where do you see ULT in 5 years?

In five years, I see our completed ULT school in Nairobi and many children being taught there. In addition to the school sponsorships, which will have increased significantly by then, we will have successfully established the START into LIFE programme and will therefore also be providing valuable support on the path to working life after leaving school. I hope that our team continues to grow and that we have realised many great and exciting projects here in Germany and are planning more. And that our documentary has been viewed by many people and has left a lasting impression.

Tell a funny/awkward/beautiful story from your school days.

When I was in the third grade, we went to the school camp in the Black Forest. Every day there we went on an excursion into nature. One day we hiked to a lake and were supposed to explore a nature trail there in small groups, for which we were given two hours. The problem with the whole thing, however, was that my two friends and I didn’t have a watch with us. After a while, we wondered why we hadn’t met anyone and the time seemed a bit long in general. But as we had got lost and couldn’t find our way back and didn’t have a mobile phone, we decided to wait where we were. After a while, our teacher desperately found us in the middle of the forest and told us that we should have been back half an hour ago, but of course we had no idea, with no watch or direction.
