When people talk about our work in Kenya, they often think first about school, classrooms, and education. And yes, that is exactly what ULT works for every single day. But sometimes life has other plans. And sometimes those plans change very quickly.
In recent weeks, heavy rainfall in Kenya has once again caused flooding. Roads are covered with water, homes are damaged, and families lose belongings they have spent years building or saving for. For many of the children we support, this doesn’t just mean wet clothes or broken furniture. It can also mean uncertainty about whether they will be able to continue attending school.
That is exactly why we created our emergency fund “Save to Grow.”
The name of our emergency fund is very intentional. “Save to Grow” means being prepared. Because sustainable development can only happen if we are also able to respond to crises when they arise.
When a house is suddenly flooded, school supplies are lost, or a family urgently needs support, our local team can act immediately. No long decision processes. No complicated procedures. That speed can make a huge difference in moments like these.
Right now, this fund is more important than ever. Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent in Kenya and they affect especially those communities that already live with very limited resources.
The emergency fund allows our team to support families exactly where help is needed most. Sometimes that means repairing damaged homes. Sometimes it means providing food or replacing school materials so that children can continue their education without interruption.
Our goal is always the same: to offer short-term support so that long-term development can continue.
Because education can only grow when children feel safe. And sometimes safety begins with something very simple: knowing that someone is there when life becomes difficult. 💛
