Teachers are overwhelmed, and there’s little room for individual support – most children receive only basic, lecture-style instruction. Even those who are eager to learn rarely have a real chance to reach their full potential.

When we first set foot in the BAS Academy, we saw more than just classrooms. We saw potential. A place that had stood strong for over 30 years close to the Soweto slum – offering education, safety, and hope to hundreds of children who would otherwise be left behind.

Now, thanks to incredible support from our community, that dream has become reality: the BAS Academy is officially part of UNDER Lea’s TRUST. It’s not just a school anymore – it’s a symbol of what we can achieve when we come together.

This isn’t about ownership. It’s about continuity, dignity, and security. The BAS Academy (small spot on the upper left side of the picture) is located very close to the Soweto Slum (bigger spot on the right side of the picture) and it would take around a 10 minutes walk for the kids to get to school in the morning. Let me tell you how we got to this point

Hi! My name is Lea

… founder of UNDER Lea’s TRUST in Germany and UNDER Lea’s INTERNATIONAL in Kenya. Since 2020, we’ve grown from a small food program to supporting over 600 children through school sponsorships. Our focus is education, but now, we’re ready to take a huge next step. So! Will you join us?

The challenge: Education or Survival?

We’ve partnered with over 70 schools and have seen firsthand what works—and what doesn’t. Some of our kids walk long distances to overcrowded classrooms with one teacher for 100 children. It’s not education, it’s survival. We want better for them. We’re fighting not just for access to education, but for quality education.

The opportunity: A school that can change lives

In May 2024, I visited Kenya and was approached with an incredible opportunity: the owner of BAS Academy offered to sell her school to us. She’s retiring and wants the school to continue supporting children, just as she has for years. To be honest, I didn’t see this coming. Our long-term plan was to build a school from scratch, and we’re in the process of buying land for it. But in Kenya, that can take years. With this offer, we can have a fully functioning school now—three buildings, 14 classrooms, a school bus, a van, and 17 teachers—all for 30 million KSH (around €200,000).
