In the last newsletter we introduced Marina from the German team. Now we introduce you again to a team member from our Kenyan team!

What are your tasks at ULT?

My primary tasks revolve around the comprehensive support and empowerment of vulnerable non-school going children residing in slums. Some of my key responsibilities include identifying and recruiting these children, ensuring their enrollment in educational programs, providing academic follow-up and support, and offering valuable mentorships to help them thrive.

Why are you involved in ULT?

I am passionately involved in ULI because of our shared mission to make a tangible difference in the lives of underprivileged children from slums by providing them with access to education. Witnessing the transformative power of education firsthand and seeing these children flourish academically and personally brings me immense joy and fulfillment. Through ULI, I can contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty and providing these deserving children with opportunities to pursue their dreams.

What was your favourite subject and what was your hate subject at school?

Reflecting on my own educational experience, I must admit that social sciences were my favorite topic in school. Exploring the complexities of human civilization, analyzing historical events, and comprehending the interplay of many cultural, political, and economic variables that shape our world captivated me. The topic piqued my interest and broadened my horizons.

Where do you see ULT in 5 years?

In five years, I envision ULI as a well-established and important organization that has a big impact on the lives of slum children on a larger scale. We will have increased our reach, reaching more slum neighborhoods and educating countless youngsters. Furthermore, ULI will have created strong ties with local schools, government agencies, and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to create a sustainable ecosystem that supports these children’s educational journey holistically. Our programs will continue to provide complete academic support, mentorship, and resource access to these children, allowing them to break free from the cycle of poverty and establish a brighter future for themselves and their communities.

Tell a funny/awkward/beautiful story from your school days.

I was so tired after a long class that I unknowingly fell asleep. I started sleep-talking, which made everyone in the class giggle. I kept rambling incoherently, oblivious to the laughter I had generated. My sleep-induced ramblings filled the classroom with wild laughter. I was startled out of my sleep by the infectious laughing, and I couldn’t help but join in, relishing the joyful moment that resulted from my inadvertent comedic act. It became a memorable event that sparked hilarity and camaraderie in the classroom, reminding us of the improbable and amusing moments that may happen even in the most uninteresting circumstances.
