“Hello, my name is Liz and I’m 14 years old. I’m in 5th grade at Mfariji Boarding School in Maua – and I’m so happy to be back in school. Like my sister Beth, I missed a lot of time and fell behind. Reading and math are hard, but we’re getting help to catch up.
Our home life has been hard. Our parents separated and things were often violent. Our mom has an alcohol problem, so Beth and I live with our dad. He’s a shoemaker and tries his best, but he barely earns enough for food. I’m afraid of being kicked out of school again – like our older brother who now lives on the streets. My favorite subject is science because I love learning how things work. I don’t like social studies and I’m scared of punishments. But I love to sing and dance, and I dream of becoming a musician. I believe in a better future – if I can stay in school. Thank you for giving me hope.”
