“Hello, my name is Brian and I live with my mom and four sisters in the Soweto slums of Nairobi. Our home is just behind an open sewage stream – not a nice place, but we stay strong as a family. My mom has had a hard life. She once sold illegal alcohol to feed us and even went to jail. During that time, we lived with my dad – but he was unstable and we suffered a lot.
Now my mom sells tea in the market. I go to the SYI center every day and love helping out and learning. Math is my favorite subject, and I’m a good artist – I love to draw. My dream is to become a photographer or even an architect. I want to create something beautiful that lasts. My best memory was simply being able to go to school. Education is my path to change. I hope to join a boarding school soon so I can truly focus and grow. I’d tell my younger self: Work hard and stay focused – your dreams are possible. With your support, I can follow them.”
