“Hello, my name is Beth and I’m 13 years old. I’m in 4th grade at Mfariji Boarding School in Maua. I’m so grateful to be back in school – I missed a lot of years and fell far behind. Reading and math are hard for me, but the teachers here give me personal support to catch up.
I don’t live with my mom anymore because she struggles with alcohol, and things at home were violent and chaotic. Now I live with my sister Liz and our dad. He’s a shoemaker and does his best, but he can’t always provide. My dream is to become an engineer so I can help my dad one day. I like English class best, though social studies is tough. Waking up early is hard, but I love learning. I skip rope, cook, sing, and dance with my sister. My biggest fear is dropping out again – like my older brother, who lives on the streets. I’m ready to work hard – I just need a chance.”
